Your new job as a plumber

IMPORTANT - depending on your circumstances you may well qualify to be able to take your NVQ plumbing course FREE!

Think of a 'plumber' and most people think of the person who fixes the leaking taps and unblocks the sink. There is however so much more that a fully qualified plumber can do.

Most plumbers will find that their day to day business typically involves installing a new bathroom suite or shower unit. They may be called upon to fit a new set of radiators throughout a house, or carry out repairs.

Other plumbers decide that they want to take their career a step further and choose to work with gas as well as water systems - for example, to install a central heating system. A plumber has to have additional qualifications beyond the plumbing course NVQ before they are allowed to work in this area. Indeed, it is a legal requirement that having passed their ACS (Approved Certification Scheme) that they are registered with CORGI (Council of Registered Gas Installers).

Think you could be a plumber?

The plumbing course NVQ will not be for everybody. Not only will you need a brain that can make calculations and solve a problem (school qualifications in maths and science are always useful), but you must also be prepared to get dirty and wet - it won't be long before you are called to fix a burst pipe or unblock a smelly drain!

That said, there are of course rewards. Once NVQ course qualified and employed you should soon find yourself earning well over £20,000 a year. If you choose to go self employed and are willing to work hard there is no reason why you should not earn at least twice that each year.

NVQ Plumbing courses

NVQ plumbing course qualifications involve both practical and theory elements. Some time will be spent working alongside a fully qualified plumber with the rest of the course being done in the training centre or classroom.

Your NVQ provider will usually organise a work placement for you unless you already know a professional plumber and can find your own placement.

Qualified plumbers are currently very much in demand and you will certainly be able to find an NVQ plumbing course provider wherever you are in the country. It should be noted though that demand for places is high and some colleges may require you to take a short test or exam first in order for them to assess your suitability.
